Castles and Palaces of Poland - (11 days)

  Tour of Poland with focus on the most beautiful castles and palaces of Poland, some preserved in excellent condition, others remaining as impressive ruins. From Medieval knight's castles of Silesia through Renaissant and Baroque residences of landowners in Southern and Central Poland to fortresses of Teutonic Knights in Northern Poland.

Details

1st Day: Wroclaw-Swidnica-Ksiaz-Krobielowice

09:00-12:30 Visit of Wroclaw- city of 100 bridges- Ostrów Tumski (the Island of the Cathedral) with the St John the Baptist Cathedral,  the University with the Baroque Aula Leopoldina and walk to the Old City ended in the one of the most beautiful medieval market squares of Europe.

12:30  -  lunch in a restaurant in the Old Town

14:00 - departure for Swidnica

15:00 – visit of the Church of Peace - the largest wooden 17th century church with a place for 7500 people. UNESCO World Heritage Monument.

16:00- transfer to the Ksiaz Castle.

16:30-18:00 -visit of Ksiaz, one of the biggest castles of Central Europe, a residence of famous for her beauty  Daisy, Princess von Hochberg, related with some mysteries of the last months of the Second World War 

19:00- arrival to Krobielowice, a castle owned by marshal Blucher who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Dinner and night in the castle

2nd Day-Olesnica-Brzeg-Bedzin-Cracow

09:00-departure for Olesnica

09:40-10:30-panoramic tour of the Olesnica Castle, with one of the most splendid Renaissance courtyards in this part of Europe, compared by some with the Wawel Castle of Cracow.

10:30-departure for Brzeg

11:30-12:30- visit of the Brzeg Castle, the Renaissance residence of the last Silesian Dukes of Polish Piast Royal Family. Another magnificient court yard that was reason to call the castle - "A Little Wawel".

16:30-17:15-visit of the Bedzin Castle- the 14th century gothic castle reconstructed in 'Romantic' style

3rd Day-Cracow-Tyniec

09:00-16:30 -visit of Cracow: The tour begins with the Wawel Castle- the Royal Residence with famous collection of Flemish tapestries, Italian paintings and the Cathedral where Polish king were crowned and buried- a mixture af various styles including one of the best examples of the Italian Renaissance style -the King Sigismundus' Chapel; visit to the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz – a famous Jewish cultural centre for the Central and Eastern Europe-sinagogues -Old Sinagogue, Isaac's Sinagogue, Remuh Sinagogue , former market square, mykvas, cementaries. 

13:00-14:30 lunch in the centre of Cracow

Walk along the Royal Way with stops at churches of St. Andrew, St. Peter and Paul; the Jagiellonian University with the Collegium Maius -Copernicus' college; the Main Market Square- the largest square of medieval Europe with the Sukiennice (the Cloth Hall) building and the Dormition of Virgin Mary Basilica holding a treasure of the North European late gothic-the Veit Stoss Altar;the Czartoryski Museum with famous paintings of Leonardo da Vinci (the Lady with Ermine) and Rembrandt (Landscape with the Good Samaritan); the Barbican with St. Florian Gate-remains of medieval city walls 

16:30-departure for Tyniec

17:15-18:30-visit of the Tyniec Abbey- the oldest Polish Benedictine abbey built on limestone hill in the 11th century. A very pictoresque place famous of its local products based on ancient receipts.

4th Day-'Eagles' Nest Route: Rabsztyn-Ogrodzieniec-Smolen-Pieskowa Skala-Ojcow

09:00 departure for the 'Eagles Nest Route' - a system of medieval castles that once protected main trade road of Polish Kingdom from south to north. Now very impressive ruins standing on high limestone rocks like 'nests of  eagles'.

10:00-10:30-short stop by the ruins of the Rabsztyn Castle from the 14th century.

10:30-departure for Ogrodzieniec

11:00-12:00-visit of the massive ruins of the Ogrodzieniec Castle, the second biggest castle of Southern Poland after the Wawel of Cracow

12:00 departure for Ojcow

12:20-12:30-short stop by the Smolen Castle-remains of brigands' castle 

13:30-14:30-lunch break in Ojcow

14:30-15:00-visit of the remains of the Gothic Ojcow Castle from the 14th century, then travel across the Ojcow National Park with naturally shaped limestone structures - the Cracow's Gate, the Hercules' Club

15:00-16:30-visit of the Pieskowa Skala -the only preserved castle on the 'Eagles' Nests Road' with the Museum of Historical Interiors and interesting collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art.

5th Day-Pszczyna-Auschwitz

09:00-departure for Pszczyna

10:45-12:30-visit of the Pszczyna Palace. One of the best preserved palaces of Poland owned by German family von Pless who possessed breweries and coal mines. 19th century interiors are one of the most represantative for noblemen residences of that period

13:00-14:30-lunch in Oswiecim

14:30-17:30-visit of the extermination camps Auschwitz-Birkenau. Special tour of places where 1,5 mln people mainly Jews from all Europe lost heir lives. Place that shouldn't be forgotten.

6th Day-Tarnow-Lancut-Baranow Sandomierski

11:00-12:30-visit of Tarnow, 'the warmest city of Poland'. The tour will include tha Market Square with the Gothic Town Hall, Renaissance Palaces, the Gothic Cathedral and remains of the Synagogue.

15:30-17:00-visit of Lancut Palace, which easily competes with Europe's grandest residences after its rebuilt in 17th century by noble families of Lubomirski and Potocki. Next to the Palace with magnificient interiors coach-houses with huge collection of historical carriages nad the bautiful palce park

18:00-check in the Baranów Castle, another splendid Polish noblemen Renaissance residence with the charming courtyard

7th Day-Krzyztopor-Kazimierz Dolny

09:40-11:00 visit of the Krzyztopor Palace- ruins of the most splendid residence of Europe before Versailles was built. A perfect example of the 'palazzo in fortezza' concept (a fortified palace). Ossolinski family built their palace according the calendar- 365 windows, 52 rooms,12 halls and 4 towers.

13:30-14:00-lunch in Kazimierz Dolny

14:00-check in the hotel; after short visit free time in Kazimierz Dolny, one of the most beautifully situated little towns in Poland. It enjoyed prosperity due to the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula. It became an economic backwater after that trade declined, and this freeze in economic development enabled the town to preserve its Renaissance urban plan and appearance. A popular holiday destination, attracting artists and summer residents. Richly decorated houses, ruins of two castles (Kazimierz and Janowiec) and old granaries are the most interesting monuments.

8th Day-Lublin-Kozlowka-Warsaw

09:00-departure for Lublin

10:30-13:00-visit of Lublin:, by some called "little Cracow", has a wonderful architecture and a charming, unique ambiance. It is really worth a visit in order to experience a "true" polish city atmosphere. The Old Town, with its old, picturesque architecture is particularly pretty. The newly renovated Lublin Castle boasts an incredible Trinity Chapel. The Chapel has been enrolled in the UNESCO cultural heritage list

14:30 -departure for Kozlowka

15:15-17:00-visit of Kozlowka- the opulent 18th century Zamoyski Palace. Its interiors retain the dedcor and original furnishings from the turn of the 20th century. Several years ago former stables of the residence were dedicated to an amusing museum of Communist art.

9th Day-Warsaw-Torun

10th Day-Torun-Chelmno-Kwidzyn-Gniew-Gdansk

 09:00-12:00-visit of Torun, a medieval town, a member of the Hanseatic League, it prospered on the grain trade. The Flemish style Town Hall, the huge St. Mary's church and SS. Johns' Cathedral, ruins of the Teutonic Knights' Castle and Museum of Nicolaus Copernicus will be visited.

13:00-14:00-lunch in Chelmno

14:00-15:00-short visit of Chelmno,  a town with well-preserved medieval centre, with five Gothic churches (13th-14th centuries) and a beautiful Renaissance Town Hall in the middle of the market square. Chełmno is Polish Town of St. Valentine for all fallen in love.

15:00-departure for Kwidzyn

16:00-17:00 visit of the Kwidzyn Castle-imposing 14th century castle of theTeutonic Knights

11th Day-Gdansk-Malbork

09:00-13:00 visit of Gdansk:Dlugi Targ (Long Street), the Crane. St. Mary's Basilica.  Visit of one of the  Amber Galleries with presentation. Tour of Westerplatte- a place where Second World War was started and Gdañsk shipyards with the Museum of 'Solidarnosc".  Former Cistercian Abbey of Oliva with magnificient organs and the Sopot Pier will complete the tour of Gdansk

15:00-17:00-visit of Malbork, former Marienburg, the capital of the Teutonic Order State. The biggest castle of Europe among those built of brick will be visited together with the Museum of Amber.
